An Investigation on the Relationship Between Language Competence and Language Use in English Linguistics
Abstract
topic. Grounded in English linguistic theory, this paper first clarifies their definitions: Language competence focuses on mastering fundamental linguistic knowledge such as phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar, while language application emphasizes flexible expression in practical
contexts. The study then analyzes their intrinsic connections from both complementary and independent perspectives, while distinguishing
them through three dimensionsprioritization, feasibility, and applicability. Finally, drawing on teaching practices, it presents implications
for English instruction and learning, offering references to enhance learners' comprehensive language proficiency.
