A Historical Study of the Development of Modern Higher Education in Tibet

Aimin Shu

Abstract

The historical development of modern higher education in Tibet constitutes an important chapter in the history of higher education
in China and represents a typical case of educational modernization in ethnic minority regions. This paper systematically reviews the evolution of modern higher education in Tibet over the past seventy years and identifies three major stages: the formative stage (19511976), characterized by institutional foundation; the adjustment stage (19771999), marked by system construction; and the reform and expansion stage
(since 2000), featuring quality-oriented development. The study argues that Tibet has gradually formed a distinctive development model that
combines strong state leadership with endogenous growth, integrates external support with internal capacity building, and aligns disciplinary
development with national strategic needs.
