Is There a Place forL1 in the Classroom?A Literature Review on the Use of the First Language in Second Language Acquisition
Abstract
dition, a range of perspectives has emerged over time regarding how the L1 might be employed to enhance learners second language (L2)
proficiency. This article first briefly traces the shift in scholarsattitudes from viewing the L1 as an obstacle to recognizing it as a resource for
L2 learning, followed by a review of previous peer-reviewed journal articles exploring how the L1 can be appropriately used to facilitate SLA
from two distinct perspectives. It is hoped that this review will offer practical insights for novice language instructors regarding the integration
of the L1 into SLA classroom practice.
