A Literature Review of Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition in Second Language Acquisition

Abstract


Vocabulary knowledge serves as the cornerstone of second language (L2) proficiency, and incidental vocabulary acquisition has
emerged as a pivotal pathway for L2 learners to expand their vocabulary. This literature review focuses on the foundational theories and key
research findings of incidental vocabulary acquisition. The review elaborates on three dominant theories guiding incidental vocabulary ac
quisition research. It then examines the effects of various factors on incidental vocabulary acquisition. This review aims to provide a holistic
understanding of the current state of incidental vocabulary acquisition research.
