Beyond Intercultural Competence: An AI-Mediated Framework for Intercultural Epistemic Agency
Abstract
through intercultural communicative competence (ICC). This paper argues that ICC foregrounds communicative performance while overlooking learners’ capacity to construct, evaluate, and negotiate intercultural knowledge with AI. It therefore introduces Intercultural Epistemic
Agency (IEA) and proposes the AI-Mediated Intercultural Epistemic Agency (AIEA) Framework. AIEA comprises five interconnected stages:
intercultural encounter, dialogic inquiry, perspective expansion, critical evaluation, and knowledge co-construction. Across these stages, AI
functions as an epistemic mediator rather than a tool or tutor. The framework extends intercultural education and epistemic agency scholarship
while providing directions for pedagogy and empirical validation across educational and cultural contexts.
