Optimizing Public Space and Exhibition Experience in Ethnic Museums through Digital Technology: The Xishuangbanna Museum of Nationalities

Kejin Li

Abstract

This paper examines how digital technology can improve public space and exhibition experience in an ethnic museum. It draws on
field visits to the Xishuangbanna Museum of Nationalities and nearby cultural sites from 2021 to 2023, followed by online observation. The
study found that some exhibits were separated from their life contexts, public areas were used mainly for circulation and waiting, and digital
display was weakly linked with online communication. Four design directions are discussed: immersive settings based on local culture, digital interpretation of objects, fuller use of indoor and outdoor public space, and links between museum visits and new media. Digital renewal
should help visitors understand culture through objects, space, and media, not simply add equipment.
