Yuqi Xu

Abstract

Zhao Mengfu and Gong Kai were outstanding equestrian painters in the Yuan Dynasty. Their paintings not only possess a profound
cultural heritage but also exhibit unique artistic styles. Zhao Mengfus Portrait of a Rider features delicate brushstrokes and vivid horse imagery, presenting the classical charm of literati painting. In contrast, Gong Kais Noble Horse employs more rugged brushwork and profound
symbolism, revealing the painters helplessness during the changes of the times. Both works share the theme of equestrianism, yet they differ
significantly in technique and thematic expression, collectively showcasing the rich diversity of equestrian painting in the Yuan Dynasty. By
comparing these two works, this paper reveals the similarities and differences in the painting styles of Zhao Mengfu and Gong Kai, and further delves into the artistic choices of different painters within the historical context of the Yuan Dynasty, providing a new perspective for a
deeper understanding of Yuan Dynasty painting art.
