A Brief Analysis of Chen Jieqis Calligraphy Concepts in Xizi Jue

Ruijia Zhang, Enhao Zhang

Abstract

Chen Jieqi of the Qing Dynasty wrote a treatise on calligraphy for beginners, The Art of Writing. In this work, he elaborated on
aspects such as holding the brush, moving the brush, choosing the brush, regulating ones breath, using ink, applying mental focus, and taking
inspiration from copying models. He also touched upon the states before and after creation, with a particular emphasis on brush techniques.
This paper first provides an explanation of the completion time and collection status of The Art of Writing. Then, it discusses the calligraphic concepts presented in the text in three stages: the method of distinct brush tip and the manifestation of brush force, the pursuit of character structure through understanding the rules, and the calligraphic viewpoint that even the blank spaces have their own connections.
