The Construction of Linguistic Landscape and Functions in Urban Public Space from a Multilingual Perspective

Xiaoyu Li

Abstract

Linguistic landscape has emerged as a burgeoning field of applied linguistics research in recent years, where, within a multilingual
lens, the linguistic landscape of urban public spaces not only embodies cultural diversity but also constitutes a vital aspect of urban functionality. This essay, grounded in the multilingual phenomena within urban linguistic landscapes, endeavors to accomplish two objectives. Firstly, to
elucidate the construction of linguistic identities under the informational function of language landscapes; secondly, to delve into the dynamic
interplay between linguistic power, cultural dynamics, and the functional and interactive nature of language landscapes in urban public spaces.
By exploring the construction of urban linguistic landscapes from a macro perspective, we can gain insights into the development trajectories
and underscores the pivotal role of cultural elements in empowering urban spatial development.
