A Cognitive Poetic Interpretation of Song of a Pipa Player from the Perspective of Figure-Ground Theory

Yuke Yang, Bin Guo

Abstract

Cognitive poetics originated from Gestalt psychology and has been extensively integrated with various cognitive linguistic theories through in-depth research by scholars, leading to their application in the analysis of literature. The figure-ground theory rooted in Gestalt psychology is based on the principle of salience, where shifts in attention trigger transformations between the figure and the ground.
This paper, utilizing the figure-ground theory, delves into three aspects of Song of a Pipa Player including syntactic structures, conceptual metaphors, textual emotions, to explore how figure-ground shifts occur within the poem, thereby highlighting the poets sentiments. It
aims to provide a novel perspective for interpreting Song of a Pipa Player and, to some extent, broaden the horizons for the dissemination of Bai Juyis poems.
