A Study on Robert T.Tally Jr.s Theory of Literary Cartography in the Context of the Spatial Turn

Long Xiao

Abstract

Since the 1960s, the spatial turn in the field of humanities and social sciences in the West, driven by the work of Foucault, Lefebvre
and Soja, lead to the emergence of the field of literary space within the context of literature. As a development based on Frederic Jamesons
cognitive mapping, Robert T. Tally Jr.s theory of literary cartography not only engages the fundamental connection between topophrenia,
literary cartography and geocriticism, but also reveals the inherent characteristics of literary cartography such as ideology, spatiality and narrativity. As an approach to understanding the modern world through the lens of text as map, literary cartography not only introduces new perspectives and methodology to literary studies, but also turns to the study of human existence.
