Why Does the Live-Action Movie Mulan Look Un-Chinese? An Interpretation of the Movie Mulan from the Viewpoint of Orientalism

Xu Yan

Abstract

This paper analyzes Disneys 2020 live-action Mulan through the theoretical lens of Edward Saids Orientalism, arguing that the
film represents an Americanized interpretation of a Chinese legend rather than an authentic cultural narrative. Drawing comparisons between
the historical Ballad of Mulan and the films setting, character portrayals, and visual design, the study identifies multiple anachronisms and
cultural misrepresentations- such as placing Mulan in a Fujian Tulou, reimagining her as a rebellious Western-style heroine, and inaccurately
depicting social customs. The paper further critiques the films reframing of Mulans values from loyalty and filial piety to individual selfrealization, situating this shift within the broader context of cultural hegemony and postcolonial globalization. Survey data from Chinese audiences reveal that the film has influenced and, in some cases, distorted younger generations perceptions of Chinese history and traditions. The
study concludes that while global cinema fosters cultural exchange, filmmakers bear a responsibility to ensure historical and cultural accuracy
in cross-cultural storytelling.
