The Performance Techniques and Challenges in Schumanns Liederkreis, Op. 39
Abstract
must be a true partnership between the 2 artists where the piano does not merely 'accompany' but is rather an equal narrator of the psychological drama. The work examines the extensive vocal requirements such as a need for significant and complex legato phrases and textural colors
required in order to bring across the rich imagery and emotional ambiguity in Eichendorff poem texts. At the same time, consider the challenging pianistic ones, such as crossing harmonics, polyphony, and subtlety, and pedal all of which need to be established to create the atmosphere of the cycle. Also, there is the overarching struggle of keeping a coherent story throughout all twelve songs as well as keeping up with
the trekking of the protagonist through nature, and alienation, memory, transcendence. Using an in-depth analysis and referencing to particular
songs, This paper illustrates the technical control and in-depth level of intelligence and emotion needed to bring this masterpieces full artistic
potential to light.
