The Study of Historical Memory and Cultural Identity in Anglo-American Literature

Jingjing Li

Abstract

This paper explores Anglo-American literary works with a focus on the intrinsic connection between historical memory and cultural
identity. Through textual analysis, it examines the diverse manifestations of collective and individual memory in literature, and analyzes the
construction of cultural identity from multiple dimensions including nationality, ethnicity, and gender. The study finds that Anglo-American
writers reconstruct historical narratives through literary creation, challenge mainstream memory discourses, and provide a cultural voice for
marginalized groups. Historical memory and cultural identity exhibit a complex interactive relationship: memory shapes the foundation of
identity, while identity in turn influences the selection and interpretation of memory. In the context of globalization, transnational literature
presents new characteristics of pluralistic identity, and traditional monolithic identity models face both deconstruction and reconstruction. This
study reveals the dual function of literature as both a carrier of cultural memory and a medium for identity construction, offering valuable insights into the understanding of contemporary multicultural society.
