Protection and Revitalization of Historical and Cultural Blocks From the Perspective of Urban Design: A Case Study of Qilou in Haikou

Bo Yuan

Abstract

The preservation and revitalization of historical and cultural districts constitute a central theme in urban renewal. Urban design, guided by the core principles of "spatial integration, functional coordination, and cultural continuity, " serves as a crucial tool for
balancing historical value with modern demands. As Hainans largest South Asian-style historical district, Haikou Qilou Old Street faces
challenges such as spatial fragmentation, functional imbalance, and monotonous visitor experiences, which fundamentally stem from systemic deficiencies in urban design. This study examines Haikou Qilou through four key dimensions of urban design: spatial morphology,
functional organization, landscape systems, and experiential creation. It analyzes existing challenges in preservation and revitalization
and proposes an implementation framework emphasizing "authentic preservation as the foundation, systematic design as the guideline,
and scenario-based revitalization as the priority, " providing practical references for the sustainable development of similar historical and
cultural districts.
