Research on Ethical Aesthetics in Korean Movies

Ji Pan

Abstract

The South Korean romance films represented by the works of Hur Jin-ho express a distinctive Oriental aesthetic character deeply
rooted in national identity. Unlike the dramatic conflicts often observed in Western cinema, Hur's approach to character shaping and narrative
pacing expresses a view of life and death rooted in the philosophical traditions of Laozi and Zhuangzispecifically the naturalistic acceptance
of impermanence. This paper focuses on the traditional ethical and moral aesthetics expressed in Hur Jin-ho's films. It argues that his works
embody a dual nature: a staunch adherence to and inheritance of traditional ethical culture, particularly Confucian virtues, and simultaneously,
a subtle expression and reconstruction of modern gender status in a changing Korean society. By analyzing the interplay between traditional
ethics and modern sensibilities, this study reveals how Hur Jin-ho constructs a unique "aesthetic of restraint."
