A Critical Discourse Analysis of Chinese and American Mainstream Media Coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony from the Perspective of Transitivity

Hanxin Tong

Abstract

News discourse implicitly conveys the respective ideologies of reporters, directly or indirectly influencing and controlling people's
thinking, and plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions. This study takes the 2024 Paris Olympic Games opening ceremony as the
research object, selecting relevant reports from mainstream media in China and the United States (20 articles each) as the corpus. Based on
Fairclough's three-dimensional discourse analysis model and the transitivity system within Halliday's systemic functional grammar, this research conducts a critical comparative analysis of these reports from the perspective of transitivity. It not only reveals the different ideologies
conveyed by Chinese and American mainstream media behind the news discourse but also explores the socio-political, economic, and cultural
factors contributing to these differences.
