Survey Report on the Use of Wuhan Dialect and Mandarin by High School Students in Wuhan

Zijun Chen

Abstract

Dialects are linguistic resources created by the residents of a region through wisdom and practice. Wuhan, situated at the easternmost end of the Southwest Mandarin region, not only shares some commonalities with Southwest Mandarin but also exhibits its own unique
characteristics in terms of phonetics and vocabulary. This paper takes high school students in Wuhan as the survey subjects and selects 200
distinctive vocabulary words from the "Wuhan Dialect Dictionary". Through a survey questionnaire, it investigates their usage of Wuhan dialect
and Mandarin, as well as their language attitudes, aiming to provide suggestions for the promotion of Mandarin and the protection of dialects.
