Bergson's Intuitive Epistemology And the Revelation for Art

Qinyang Zeng

Abstract

In his philosophy of life, Henri Bergson argues that instinct and intellect, though useful for engaging with the external world, cannot grasp real timethe indivisible, everchangingduration. Instinct is limited to fixed patterns, while intellect dissects fluid experience into
measurable fragments. To overcome this, he proposes intuition as a central Method: by focusing on inner consciousness and freeing itself
from utility and language, intuition allows the subject to enter life itself and perceive the creative movement of thean vital. This cognition
is participatory rather than observational, aiming not at explanation but at the authentic process of becoming. Art is the sensory expression of
intuition. When a work abandons symbolic or practical purposes and instead conveys the direct experience of temporal flow through rhythm,
it becomes a concrete way to reach duration.
